Civic Integration Exam in the Netherlands – What It Is and How to Prepare

The civic integration exam (Inburgeringsexamen) is mandatory for many immigrants and refugees seeking permanent residency or Dutch citizenship.


✅ Who Must Take It?

  • Non-EU residents and refugees.
  • Those applying for permanent residency or Dutch nationality.
  • Exceptions apply for long-term residents or holders of EU diplomas.

📚 What’s in the Exam?

  1. Dutch Language (A2 or B1 level):
    • Listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  2. Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNM):
    • Laws, culture, daily life in the Netherlands.
  3. Participation Declaration (PVT):
    • Signing commitment to Dutch values.
  4. MAP / Work or Participation Track:
    • Required for newcomers since 2021.

📝 Registration & Location:

  • Apply via DUO.nl.
  • Exams take place in official CBR centers.

⏱️ Timeline & Preparation:

  • You have up to 3 years to complete the process.
  • Retakes allowed without limit.
  • Municipalities offer subsidized courses.

💰 Costs:

  • Each part costs between €50–€150.
  • Recognized refugees usually get it funded by the municipality.
