Civic Integration Exam in the Netherlands – What It Is and How to Prepare
The civic integration exam (Inburgeringsexamen) is mandatory for many immigrants and refugees seeking permanent residency or Dutch citizenship.
✅ Who Must Take It?
- Non-EU residents and refugees.
- Those applying for permanent residency or Dutch nationality.
- Exceptions apply for long-term residents or holders of EU diplomas.
📚 What’s in the Exam?
- Dutch Language (A2 or B1 level):
- Listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNM):
- Laws, culture, daily life in the Netherlands.
- Participation Declaration (PVT):
- Signing commitment to Dutch values.
- MAP / Work or Participation Track:
- Required for newcomers since 2021.
📝 Registration & Location:
- Apply via DUO.nl.
- Exams take place in official CBR centers.
⏱️ Timeline & Preparation:
- You have up to 3 years to complete the process.
- Retakes allowed without limit.
- Municipalities offer subsidized courses.
